Donald Trump has warned Bernie Sanders supporters that, if elected, Hillary Clinton will betray them by supporting the Trans-Pacific Partnership after Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe said she will ultimately flip-flop on the trade deal.

McAuliffe, a close political ally of the Clintons, expressed confidence that Hillary Clinton would ultimately support passage of the TPP, despite claiming to oppose the trade deal during her primary battle with Senator Bernie Sanders.

“Yes. Listen, she was in support of it. There were specific things in it she wants fixed,” he said in an interview with Politico.

In response, Donald Trump took to Twitter to warn Sanders supporters that a vote for Hillary Clinton is a vote for passage of the TPP.

“As I have been saying, Crooked Hillary will approve the job killing TPP after the election, despite her statements to the contrary,” he added.

After a public backlash, and anger from the Clinton campaign, McAuliffe’s spokesman Brian Coy attempted to walk back his comments.

“While Governor McAuliffe is a supporter of the TPP, he has no expectation Secretary Clinton would change her position on the legislation and she has never told him anything to that effect,” he said.

The notion that Hillary Clinton would flip-flop on her support of the TPP is not surprising, as she has already done so once before.

As Secretary of State, she called the TPP a “gold standard” trade deal, only signaling her opposition when it became clear her primary and general election opponents both opposed the deal.

With many Sanders supporters already unsure about their ability to trust Hillary Clinton, Governor McAuliffe’s comments only make it more difficult to believe Hillary Clinton will keep her word.
