An elderly Salt Lake County resident is the first person with Zika to die in the continental U.S., health officials announced Friday.
The resident tested positive for Zika after visiting “an area of the world where mosquitos are known to spread Zika virus,” according to the Salt Lake County Health Department. Officials noted that they also had an underlying health condition and the exact cause of their death has not yet been determined.
“It may not be possible to determine how the Zika infection contributed to the death,” a statement from the health department reads.
Officials said they would not be able to release the resident’s name or her travel history due to health privacy laws. They died in late June.
