Hundreds of protesters angered by a grand jury decision to not indict a NYPD police officer for the death of Eric Garner surged into Times Square, Union Square, Rockefeller Center and other New York landmarks Wednesday evening.

Update: New video of Garner killing (at bottom of the post).

Daniel Pantaleo strangled Garner to death with a chokehold after he was confronted for selling untaxed cigarettes on Staten Island. Police ignored Garner’s complaints that he was unable to breathe. He suffered from asthma.

Protesters chanted “I can’t breath” as they marched.

Tweets from reports said protesters were being arrested at Rockefeller Center.

Protesters shut down a number of streets in New York, including Broadway, 50th, 8th, and also blocked intersections on 49th and 6th and 6th and W 47th.

Following the grand jury decision, Eric Holder announced the Justice Department “will proceed with a federal civil rights investigation” into Garner’s death. He said the investigation will be “independent, thorough and fair.”

“All lives must be valued,” Holder said and added that police brutality incidents around the country “have tested the sense of trust between law enforcement and the communities they are charged to serve.”
